a) To manage, control and operate all Government secondary school institutions in the state.
b) To implement all policies on Education in the state in conformity with the National Policy in Education.
c) To maintain all Educational facilities and equipment in the state in line with Government policy on education.
d) To implement the 6-3-3-4 system of education in the state as contained in the national policy on education.
e) To provide information and advice to state Ministry of Education to facilitate the development realistic State education policy.
f) To develop strategies or the execution of educational policy in general.
g) To direct, motivate and control the performance of the staff.
h) To ensure that progress of education in the state is in accordance with approved objectives, target and that service are being provided with efficiency and economy.
i) To ensure uniformity in condition of services for teachers and other staffs in Government Institution throughout the state.
j) To employ, promote and discipline all teachers and other staffs in Government Institution under its control.
k) To carry out the registration of post primary school teachers in the state in consultation with the state Ministry of Education.
l) To receive, investigate and take action promptly upon all genuine complaint regarding matters within it powers under this Edict.
m) To carry out such function and general direction as may be passed on to it in writing by the Governor.
